Child Benefit

CHILD BENEFIT

Child benefit is a non-means-tested, non-contributory benefit paid to a person who is responsible for a child. Benefit is paid for each child under 16 and for young people aged 16 to 18 if they are in full-time non-advanced education. A higher amount of benefit is paid for the oldest eligible child.

There is no upper or lower age limit for claiming child benefit, although a client claiming child benefit will need a national insurance number, which s/he will not have until s/he is 16.

However, if a child under 16 has a child of her/his own, s/he can claim child benefit without a national insurance number. Alternatively, the person responsible for a parent under 16 may be able to claim child benefit for both the parent under16 and her/his child.

For example, Kylie is 14 and lives with her mother Julie. Kylie has a baby, Robbie, and Julie claims child benefit for Kylie as the eldest eligible child and for Robbie as the subsequent eligible child.
